Chapters: Meiji Restoration, Meiji Period, France-japan Relations, French Military Mission to Japan, Ansei Great Earthquakes, French Military Mission to Japan, Tenpo Famine. Excerpt: The Ansei Great Earthquakes (, Ansei no Dai Jishin ) were a series of three major earthquakes that struck Japan during the Ansei era (1854-1860).The earthquake was blamed on a giant catfish (Namazu ) thrashing about. Ukiyo-e prints depicting namazu became very popular around this time.Other notable quakes to strike in the Ansei period include one in the Iga area, one which registered 7.4 on the Richter scale and struck Kyushu and Shikoku on November 7, 1854, and the 1858 Hietsu earthquake which struck the Hietsu area on April 9, 1858.See also (online edition) References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The development of France-Japan relations in the 19th century coincided with Japan’s opening to the Western world, following two centuries of seclusion under the “Sakoku ” system and France’s expansionist policy in Asia. The two countries became very important partners from the second half of the 19th century in the military, economic, legal and artistic fields. The Bakufu modernized its army through the assistance of French military missions (Jules Brunet ), and Japan later relied on France for several aspects of its modernization, particularly the development of a shipbuilding industry during the early years of the Imperial Japanese Navy (Emile Bertin ), and the development of a Legal code. France also derived part of its modern artistic inspiration from Japanese art , essentially through Japonism and its influence on Impressionism , and almost completely relied on Japan for its prosperous silk industry.Context Main article: France-Japan relations Hasekura Tsunenaga

 A Factory of Cunning

A Factory of Cunning

$19.99

“A squelchingly well-researched period piece with sex, lust, overripeness and what one character calls the ‘odour’ of the scholar permeating every paragraph. It is also . . . a remarkable tour de force, jampacked with poetry, verbal fireworks, vitality and charm.”—The Spectator [UK]“The pages of this unscrupulous story are lined with lace, silk and muslin—all of it stitched together in a fabric of shimmering deceit.”—The Washington Post Book WorldIn this elaborate and finely woven novel set in 18th Century London, Mrs. Fox, a French noblewoman with a scandalous past, squares off against Earl Much, a debauched British aristocrat, in a battle of will and deceit that will claim many casualties along the way. Intent on improving her station in Georgian society, Mrs. Fox  trades upon her considerable powers of wit and seduction in order to profit from the appetites of men. Her rival, however, is a crafty and resourceful man who has devoted his life to collecting priceless objects and ruining young women, and he will not be so easily beaten. Reminiscent of the world brought to life in Dangerous Liaisons, A Factory of Cunning is seductive, calculating, and thoroughly entertaining.Philippa Stockley studied English at Oxford and period costume history at the Courtauld Institute. She produced her first illustrated novel at six and her first stage design at ten. A professional painter and designer, as well as an editor at the Evening Standard, she lives in London.
