 8va Octave Fuzz Pedal

8va Octave Fuzz Pedal

$139.99

The Hartman Electronics 8va Octave Fuzz is a one-octave-up analog fuzz pedal. A meticulous recreation of the original Tycobrahe Octavia guitar pedal, the 8va offers unprecedented sonic fidelity combined with essential modern amenities: heavy-duty true-bypass switching, LED indicator, and a 9VDC input jack for use with external power supply.Like the original, the 8va uses a transformer-coupled Germanium-diode output stage to produce a tone an octave higher than its input. The higher the note that is played, the stronger the octave tone produced. The pedal's circuitry is entirely analog. The results are immediate–there is no delay or latency commonly associated with digital pitch shifters. The octaves literally bloom.Because of the way the 8va achieves its octave effect it is capable of producing unusual sonic artifacts distinctly analog in nature, not unlike certain sounds produced by ring-modulators and 4-quadrant multiplier circuits of vintage analog synthesizers: at low settings of the Boost knob, where the octave-up is at its most prominent and the level of fuzz is at its lowest, single notes will produce the anticipated octave pitch, but double stops, chords, etc., will produce NEW tones. The bell-like quality of the tones is a function of the musical interval(s) between the notes played. In other words, 3rds and 6ths produce different results than 4ths and 5ths. You can experiment with this effect in different registers of the instrument, e.g. letting the low E string drone quietly (acting as a carrier wave, to use ring-mod terminology) while playing a line in Bb Major high on the neck on the upper strings, and get some pretty interesting sounds.Hartman Electronics offers (2) additional features not available on the originals:Input Trim: passive filter reduces gain of certain frequencies prior to the first gain stage to reduce the rasp typically associated with this type of fuzz. As a by-product of this action, the Input Trim evokes the octave-u

 Agony & Irony

Agony & Irony

$25.98

Major-label debuts from punk bands usually all follow the same route, and end up sounding polished and produced. But with Alkaline Trio six full-lengths into their career, it could be assumed that they would be immune to any sort of big sound alteration on Agony & Irony, their first offering for Epic. Besides, Alkaline Trio already polished things up a few albums ago — the raw, drunken rants of their past didn’t make it very far past Asian Man Records. So the fact that Agony & Irony is overall a moderately paced affair featuring songs more pop/rock than pop-punk isn’t such a surprise; it’s simply a logical progression from Crimson. It might be slightly disappointing that some of their raw edge didn’t return — and the lyrics are effective, if not quite up to the cleverness they’ve shown in the past — but at the same time, the continued polish isn’t necessarily a bad thing; there are some pretty great songs here. Opener “Calling All Skeletons” is a perfect pop song — complete with handclaps and hip shakes — tailor-made for soundtracking the reckless house party scene of a prime-time teen drama. “I Found Away” skips along to a shuffling drumbeat courtesy of Derek Grant underneath modern rock guitars, while “Help Me” throws everything it has to Matt Skiba’s expressive vocals. The latter song seems to set the standard, since although Dan Andriano chimes in on almost every melody, he noticeably only takes lead on a handful — as on the lonely vintage pop of “Love Love, Kiss Kiss” — which is a far cry from earlier albums where the split was almost even. Agony & Irony continues with the blood reds, black nights, and images of death that have become part of the band’s trademark, but the guys also inject a few songs with some undercurrents of hope through the haze, which is, admittedly, a nice touch. And there seems to be an equal amount of contentedness as misery in this set, which does suit the aging band. But even so, it’s a little hard not to wish for mor…

 An Old-Fashioned Christmas

An Old-Fashioned Christmas

$9.99

Nothing captures the magic of Christmas like the drooling face of a child and a cheap-ass little fake tree.” –An Old-Fashioned ChristmasIn the tradition of Holidays on Ice and Bad Santa, Patrick Regan counters saccharine seasonal sentiment with a dose of holiday-noir.Remember Christmases of old? Simpler times, when four-year-old orphans were used for market research and Santa could call a pretty elf “Sweet Cheeks” and not get slapped with a sexual harassment suit?In An Old-Fashioned Christmas, author Patrick Regan collects images from the golden days of Christmas and pairs them with wryly sardonic captions to offer a reminder of what Christmas is really all about-namely, “hobos, orphans, boozed-up Santas, pill-popping housewives, and the shattered dreams of adorable children.” Fans of Regan’s The Book of Bad Habits will take twisted delight in his skewering of the most cherished (and overstuffed) holiday of all. The 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s-vintage photos are odd enough on their own, but when Regan’s caustic captions start flying, no tradition is safe from mockery.Christmas just ain’t what it used to be, and judging from the subversive gems in this more naughty-than-nice book, we should all be extremely grateful for that.

 Anar

Anar

$15.98

Being in a band with Glen Hansard can’t be easy. He’s a magnetic frontman, the kind of musical black hole whose charisma and supersized vocals seem to suck the light out of everything else on-stage. As one half of the Swell Season, though, Mark? ta Irglov? quietly held her ground, yielding the spotlight to her partner whenever he wanted it but rarely disappearing into the background. Now, with the Swell Season on the back burner and her relationship with Hansard downgraded to “friends only,” she makes her solo debut with Anar. Left to her own devices, Irglov? clings to a delicate mix of singer/songwriter piano tunes and adult contemporary ballads, most of which prize ethereality above genuine pop hooks. Brushed percussion and gobs of background vocals help beef up an otherwise sparse sound, and some of the better songs pit Irglov? ’s piano against a backdrop of thick, vintage-sounding horns. Even at its most ornate, though, this album never manages to bring its maker out of her introverted shell. Irglov? always worked well as a foil to Glen Hansard — she was the calm to his frenzy, the cool-down to his catharsis — but she’s too subdued on her own, and Anar’s pretty, gauzy ambience makes an impression without leaving a real impact. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi
